It will return next month on 6 May as scheduled. Wednesday, 3 April 2024 at 1:00 PM The Women of 1620 Eighteen women (along with 34 children) boarded the Mayflower in 1620.  This is the heart-wrenching tale of the only women who survived to the first Thanksgiving.  Overshadowed by the men you all know, this true-life drama shines light on the four strong women who endured hardships and tragedy to give birth to a new nation! We also delve into feeding the family, women’s rights, and daily work of the times. Presented by Lori Coffey. However, much of this material is scattered in libraries and archives throughout the country. WorldCat and ArchiveGrid are online resources that allow you to search many of these repositories to identify and locate materials on the families and topics you are researching. This class explores the world of ancestor occupations--what our ancestors did for a living, where to find that information, and what to do with it once found. Presented by Susan Styx. Register Saturday, 30 March 2024 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM Family History Assistance Day Family History Assistance Day is Back! This is a day where you bring your research notes as a starting point, and with the assistance of a volunteer researcher, you explore the internet to hunt for data to further fill out your family tree, work on that brick wall, extend your search, or just get started. This is a great opportunity for those just starting out in their genealogy research, as well as for experienced researchers who just need another set of eyes to help move through a pesky research question. Volunteers will also be available in the Genealogy Center on the 2nd floor to introduce you to our print collection and assist in the use of that material by giving tours, as well as introduce you to the computer databases that are available, and show how to use them. For those who wish to participate via the internet, you can do so using Zoom. You need to register ahead of time (for Zoom only), but you will be served in the order that you log into the meeting.  This hybrid (in-person and online) event begins at 11 am in Jenkins Room A at the Largo Public Library and runs to 4 pm, on a first-come first-served basis. This event is free and open to the public. Even if you can’t make it, tell your friends, especially those who are new to genealogy. In that process we seek to uncover relationships and lost or heretofore unknown ancestors. This class shows a strategy on how to do that, using an actual family as an example. In addition, it also shows how to uncover hints on using resources outside of the census itself. Presented by Jean Roberson. Register Thursday, 14 Mar 2024 at 1:00 PM Life Aboard the Mayflower 1620 We all know the Mayflower Pilgrims’ story of thanksgiving after a grueling winter of failures and death.  But how much do we know about this tiny ship with the huge reputation? The Mayflower was their lifeline and their home, where babies were born and heroes were created as tempest and destruction crashed over them. Register Saturday, 16 March 2024 at 11:00 AM Program Meeting--Lecture Series We're Related to George Washington and  Her Name Was Not "Unknown" This program will consist of two lectures presented by Gena Philibert-Ortega. The first will begin about 11:15 after a brief business meeting. The second will begin about 1:00 pm after a short break for lunch. We’re Related to George Washington? Proving (or Disproving) Family Stories I have them and you have them. In fact, we all have them, that story about our family’s brush with greatness. Maybe you’re related to Jesse James, or your ancestor was on the Titanic, or you’re descended from three brothers who came to America.  But is it true? Learn the methodology for proving or disproving that family story. Her Name Was Not "Unknown." Finding Female Ancestors “What’s her maiden name?” “What happened to her after her husband died?” “How do I start researching my great-grandmother?” We’ve all felt the disappointment of seeing the word “unknown” to describe a female ancestor’s name. How do we go from “unknown” to finding a name?  This presentation will explain techniques, methodology, and resources vital to family history research.
