We will give you ideas on what to do and what NOT to do! Presented by Lori Coffey. Register Thursday, 01 Feb 2024 at 7:00 PM DNA Basics II (Shared Matches) This class focuses on how to use DNA "cousin" matching in your research. Whether it is called "Shared Matches", "In Common With", or some other title, all of the primary DNA companies have tools that allow you to analyze your matches based on the groups that have DNA in common. DNA Basics I is recommended, but not required before attending Basics II. Presented by Denise Manning and Susan Luce. This will be an online presentation via Zoom. But did you know it’s also a valuable companion for genealogists? You will want to keep it open all the time after we show you the three biggest genealogy uses for this powerful app: clipping and storing research, manipulating photos, and turning family tree reports into beautiful books or videos! We’ll give you tips to take your PowerPoint skills to the next level whether you’re using your own computer or the library’s. Register Saturday, 20 Jan 2024 at 11:00 AM Program Meeting--Pedigree Triangulation Have you heard the term “triangulation” applied to using DNA in genealogy and wondered what it meant? Triangulation is such a powerful tool that the major DNA testing companies as well as third party companies are working hard to provide easier ways for using this concept. This presentation will explore pedigree triangulation and show you examples to help you understand what it is and how it can confirm your research and make progress on genealogical challenges. PGS Annual Seminar 24 February 2024 Registration is Now Open

The Pinellas Genealogy Society is pleased to announce its Annual Seminar on 24 February 2024 featuring J. Mark Lowe. You can attend this hybrid event in-person at the Largo Public Library or over the Internet. The registration fee for PGS members is $35 and for non-members is $40 whether attending in-person or virtually. Box lunches will be available for purchase. Mark Lowe has been researching families for more than 55 years. He grew up in Tennessee with extensive family roots in Kentucky. He has traveled extensively in both states and enjoys sharing his love of genealogy and the joy of research with others, including some historic re-enacting. As a researcher and lecturer, Mark enjoys working with genealogical groups and professional organizations. He is a former President of the Association of Professional Genealogists, and the former Vice-President and Secretary of the Federation of Genealogical Societies In the process of teaching others, Mark builds his own skills and insight for research. His experience as a Classroom Teacher, Principal, and Professional Researcher provides a different perspective for each research problem. He also currently hosts a YouTube Channel. During this day-long hybrid event, Mark will give four presentations that will hold something for everyone. The topics are: “Ready-Set-Plan! Developing a One-Step Research Plan” “Documenting the “Right” Family While Staying on Track” “Making Those Early Census Records Talk to You” “Finding Your Landless Ancestors” In addition to Mark’s presentations, two breakout speakers will make presentations during the lunch break. Taneya Koonce will speak on “Mapping Heritage & Health: Your Medical Family History” Debbie W. Smyth will present “Timelines: A Genealogical Tool for Organization and Analysis. A conference booklet, including presentation handouts, will be available to all registrants. Those attending online will receive a PDF document. We at PGS are proud of this annual, day-long event; and excited about the selection of topics we have scheduled. Does your DNA reveal Scottish or Irish ancestry, but you don’t have any in your tree? That happened to me!  Join me as I take you through my Gaelic journey searching for royalty for my mother! This intriguing journey took me through the history of Scotland, a land of two peoples, and how it’s intertwined with that of Ireland. Then follow the Scottish diaspora around the world as they fled the king’s wrath.  I’ll share tips to help you with your search along the way!
