Delta County,Michigan B-M-D Online

If you have ancestors from Michigan, specifically Delta County, you are in luck. The county’s website contains several great references for our use.

They offer a searchable birth , marriage, and death index covering  years back into the 1860’s. Death and marriage records run to 2010 and 2014 respectively, while birth records run to 1914.

The site also links to a mapping site for the county that is very attractive and easy to use.

Check it out at:  Delta County of Michigan

USGS Historical Topographic Map Explorer

Here is a great site if you wish to explore topographical maps for the areas in the US where your ancestors lived.

The interface is easy to use. Zoom to the area of the US you are interested in (this is done by using your mouse scroll wheel), then where ever you click, a timeline of maps available will appear at the bottom of the screen. The year of publication of the map and the scale will be shown. Click on the map of interest and it will be displayed. In the left panel of the screen you’ll find a handy set of instructions to guide you.

Once the map is displayed, you can zoom in without loss of detail. You can download your chosen map to a PDF file.

Newberry Research Library in Chicago

According to their website, this research library has been collecting genealogy and local history material since 1887. Chicago is certainly represented in their holdings, but the range of the material goes well beyond that location.

The link below takes you directly to the genealogy and local history page, but take some time to explore other pages of this helpful site. Of particular interest is the link to “Newberry Research Guides.” You will find it in about the middle of the landing page.

Library and Archives Canada Increases Its Directory Offering

The Library and Archives Canada has added directories for Hamilton, Kingston, and London ( all in Ontario). Also new are farm directories covering southwestern Ontario counties.

These new additions to their collection are not searchable, and are in PDF format only. This is not a great drawback, since the entries are alphabetical, and you can use your PDF viewer search capability if you wish. Although the time frame for the directories differs by community, the collection covers generally the second half of the 19th century.

Check it out at:  Available editions in PDF format - Library and Archives Canada
